What Is a Kitsune?
A Kitsune is a magical fox spirit from Japanese folklore, believed to possess incredible intelligence and supernatural abilities. Unlike ordinary foxes, Kitsune grow wiser and more powerful as they age — eventually growing up to nine tails that represent their magical strength.
Some Kitsune are kind and helpful guardians, serving as messengers of the Shinto deity Inari. Others are mischievous tricksters who enjoy playful pranks and testing human honesty. In many stories they transform into humans, create convincing illusions, and summon glowing magical flames called kitsunebi.
Today the Kitsune remains one of Japan's most beloved mythical creatures, appearing in anime, video games, books, and shrines across the country.
The Kitsune stands alongside dragons, the phoenix, and the unicorn as one of the world's greatest legendary creatures. Explore the full mythical creatures guide to discover more.
