What Is a Mermaid?
A mermaid is a legendary sea creature with the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. According to folklore, mermaids live beneath the ocean — swimming gracefully through coral reefs, underwater kingdoms, and hidden lagoons.
For thousands of years, people have shared mermaid stories. Some legends describe them as friendly protectors of the sea who help sailors during storms, while others warn that their beautiful singing voices can lure ships onto rocks. Because mermaid stories appear in cultures across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, they are considered one of the oldest and most widespread mythical creatures in history.
The word mermaid comes from two Old English words: mere (sea) and maid (young woman) — together, "sea maiden." Discover more legendary beasts in our mythical creatures guide, or meet other ocean myths like the Kraken.
