What Is a Banshee?
A Banshee is a legendary female spirit from Irish folklore best known for her mournful cry, often called a wail or keen. According to tradition, her cry warns that someone in a particular family may soon die. Rather than causing death herself, the Banshee serves as a supernatural messenger who announces that an important event is approaching.
In many stories, the Banshee watches over ancient Irish families — especially those with long noble histories. She is often portrayed as a guardian spirit who mourns for those whose lives are coming to an end. The word Banshee itself comes from the Irish Bean Sí, meaning "Woman of the Fairy Mound."
Today the Banshee remains one of the best-known figures in Celtic mythology — a symbol of mystery, loyalty, and ancient folklore.
The Banshee stands alongside fairies, the kitsune, and the phoenix as one of the world's most fascinating legendary spirits. Explore the full mythical creatures guide to discover more.
