What Is Cthulhu?
Cthulhu is a fictional cosmic entity created by American author H. P. Lovecraft. The creature first appeared in the 1928 short story The Call of Cthulhu and quickly became one of the most famous monsters in modern fantasy literature.
Cthulhu is described as an enormous being with the head of an octopus, the body of a giant humanoid, dragon-like wings, and huge claws. In Lovecraft's stories, Cthulhu belongs to a group of ancient beings known as the Great Old Ones, mysterious entities that existed long before human civilization.
Over the past century, Cthulhu has become much more than a literary character. Today it appears in books, movies, television shows, role-playing games, board games, comics, and video games — making it one of the world's best-known fictional creatures.
Cthulhu stands alongside the kraken, the hydra, and the dragons as one of fiction's most legendary beings. Explore the full mythical creatures guide to discover more.
